The lightness of bamboo

Bamboo is a type of plant that can seen as a large grass or "graminea". It is hollow in its structure, and grows in nots, always towards the light. It is a construction material used in traditional dwelling, but today it promises a lot for larger scale construction. It is sustainable in all three axes, social, economic and environmental. Aesthetically is beautiful. Ecuador has a great variety of bamboo due to its particular geographical location, but, two species, Guadua angustifolia Kunth, Dendrocalamus asper, and Phyllostachys aurea have become the prefered species in the country, the first two for construction, and the last one for furniture. The followin study deals with the constructive potential of Phyllostachys aurea for light structures that can be built and unbuilt very quickly. These structures are a clear reinterpretation of Buckminster Fuller's geodesic dome made with bamboo.

This technical approach towards the research in bamboo has another side that is directly more human and tries to use it to improve the life of people, like this example of Bamboo home remodeling in Mashpi with community participation.
